From serial number X13 927 613. Places 213 xxx xxx saws about April of 1985. Doesn't take long with a bunch of IPl or tech data (even easier if you have a Stihl CD) to create a table with approximate dates for all serial numbers since the 9 digit form was created. I have purchased a Cub recently from a friend of a friend. He says that this tractor is a 1952 model. The serial number is 42438. What got me questioning the year was the white grill that is on mine instead of the wire mesh grill that I have been seeing on the front of pictures that I have found on the internet for 1952 Cubs. I am new to Cubs but have wanted one for 20 years. This tractor is in really good shape and is all original with the what I believe is the very first coat of paint. Decals are good also.

Question , are the serial numbers stamped on the block ( below number one cylinder), the same as the the serial number for the tractor ?
The serial number plate is gone from tractor , trying to figure out what year it is .
All castings numbers end with the letter E
Block serial number is 83690 followed by the letter V
Thank you
Griff

with the cast number E that would indicate 1959 model or at least when those parts were cast. it could be a 60 if you have late E codes ie.. 12 20 E would have been made in 59 but sold as a 60 model. But most likly you have a 59 if you lack any dec. codes.

I'm NOT an expert on this nor do I claim to be, but the 'E' date code was recycled and used again in 1979, and, according to tractordata, 1979 was the last year the 140 was made, so for the production run of the 140, 'E' could mean w959 OR 1979.
What's your 'take' on this, Andrew?

If that is true as Hal has stated then it is a 1979 model .

Bob, that seems very very possible, and i forget about the lapsing of the use of letters. I was just thinking 'farmall' 140 and not 'international' 140 which i think '79' 140 would be called? I think the best way to find out the year maybe by looking at it, i think the 140 changed styles over the years.

Doing some research in Tractor Registry
I found several tractor listed by engine number
1960---engine # 88631
1960---engine # 88334
1963--- engine # 101453
1964 --- engine # 106678
So by this the engine serial number IS NOT the same as the serial number .
I am thinking that mine is a 1959 model .
Casting codes of the letter E support this also .
Engine casting codes 367825R2
Thanks guys !

If its a 1979 it will have an alternator in stead of a generator and it will have a key start only and also they have two flashers on the fenders .Also the fan shroud is bigger on the later models. Erik.

If its a 1959 model it will have the old style grill and a 6 volt system with a pull start.

Engine numbers were not the same as the serial numbers. That engine number was probably used in December '59, on a serial number close to 7600. Casting date code 'E' did not come around a second time during 140 production. 1979 was back to 'C'. The 'V' code after the engine number indicates exhaust valve rotators were installed.

Jim I have a list that says E was used in 1979. would like to know if its incorrect. I agree his is not a 79. Tractor serial numbers started at 501 and the engine serial numbers started at 65001 for a 140 I think.

Pretty sure the cast date codes are different on the 140 than a Cub, A, B, etc. I would be intrested in seeing this list and any other information that would be 'correct' for these tractors. I have found alot of conflicting info

I will try to jot down some of the 140 tractors I've got. Its just so dang hard to find them and once you do, they're always in tough places to read.
