I've never used an E facilitator, but the idea seems bizarre to me - why would you use a 'fix' that only partly covers the hole you need covered for playing E, and also partly covers it for a bunch of other notes for which it should be open? It's cheaper to add to a flute you already own, fine, but to deliberately avoid a split-E on a new flute seems willful. The split-E at least has the benefit of directly solving the problem. I can also attest that it weighs approximately nothing (look at it!).Repairs I don't know about, except that I'm happy to pay for repairs to such a useful bit of mechanism.

In theory, the hole doesn’t really need to be covered to make a high E come out. You are essentially stabilizing/clarifying the E harmonic from the low A fingering. It doesn’t really play into other fingerings either since there are really two G# keys on modern flutes with a closed G# mechanism. Without a split E, the top G# key (where the facilitator goes) always goes down with the G key, and we vent the G# with the pinkie. This is true for high Eb as well. Where it falls flat (heh) are notes like high A, where the airspeed is too fast for the G key to vent everything enough.

This is also why you don’t see facilitators on piccolos.If you need one of them, I am totally in the split E camp. The mechanism is really not heavy or wildly complex, I’ve not had any more repair issues than any other mechanism, and the cost is negligible when buying a new flute.

With split-E, E3 is a vented third harmonic of E1, with the venting accounting for the ease of response, and also ease of getting a good tone quality. Even in the first case it seems like an ugly solution because (acoustically) the G tone hole ought to be completely open for playing A1, A2 etc, right? You seem to be saying that this is only a problem for A3, but eg the F# tone hole is made deliberately high on the tube to account for the flattening affect of RH3 when playing F#1 and F#2, even with two full open tone holes between. It's hard for me to believe that the facilitator can be effective for E3 without flattening A1, or affecting its sound. I believe the point of the facilitator is to help force the nodes of the sound wave in the right location, ”tricking” the airstream into thinking the key is closed. You can do this without the facilitator too, with good lip control and adding the pinkie Db. I have neither the facilitator or split E on my pro flute and don’t miss it a bit.I’ve not noticed a difference on A1 or A2 with a facilitator (certainly won’t rule it out though! Probably affected by the player and instrument. There is def a difference in A3 and other alt high fingerings), but you are right, the split E is a much more complete solution, with no potential for this to even happen. This is why there is no facilitator for piccolo, too.

You can't argue with experience! - maybe it really does work for some (or indeed all) people. I can certainly understand using a flute with neither, if you just accept that you have to work a bit harder at E3 (everyone has to do that for F#3 anyway). There is a great video where James Galway says that he tried his only flute with a split-E after a long break, thought 'Wow, this is so easy and sounds incredible', then realised that the split-E mechanism had been switched off all along!It's just that if you do decide you want to do something about E3, from the theory point of view split-E is a specific and complete solution. That's enough to sell it to me - but then I have a weakness for theory at the expense of practice (oh open-G# system with F#-mechanism, one day, one day.and thank god no-one is making Murray flutes.).
