The Career Switcher Program consists of two Phases. Phase I Phase I (consisting of 150 hours), teaches our students how to teach, and includes topics on the foundations of education, human growth and development, curriculum, instruction and assessment, teaching with technology, classroom management, reading in the content area and more. Currently enrolled GMU students and faculty may rent lockers for a semester-long period and either return their locker at the end of their rental period or renew it for an additional semester. Due to all classes moving online for the Spring 2020 semester, all of our appointments will now be virtual! Appointments can be over the phone or via video chat. To meet with a career counselor or industry advisor, current degree-seeking Mason students should make an appointment via Handshake and select the appointment medium as phone or video.

Until in-person classes resume, Career Services will provide document review through email. To have your resume or cover letter reviewed, please email it to careers@gmu.edu and include a link to a job or program description. A Peer Career Advisor will review your document and provide feedback by email during regular Drop-in Hours, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

All Mason students and alumni are welcome to attend University Career Services workshops, programs, and events.

Current Mason students and Mason alumni can schedule appointments with us. We are unable to offer Handshake accounts to Executive & Professional Education or Non-Degree students at this time. We encourage these students to utilize our online resources and attend our career events to gain assistance in the career development process.

Missing an appointment without providing University Career Services sufficient notice prevents other Mason students and alumni from meeting with an advisor during the session reserved for you. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment in the future, please do so through Handshake or by calling Career Services at (703) 993-2370.

Interested in obtaining your Virginia Teaching license through an accelerated route?If you currently hold a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and have at least three years of full time work experience or its equivalent, the Career Switcher program may be for you! The Career Switcher Program consists of two Phases:Phase IPhase I (consisting of 150 hours), teaches our students how to teach, and includes topics on the foundations of education, human growth and development, curriculum, instruction and assessment, teaching with technology, classroom management, reading in the content area and more.In addition to this instruction, Career Switchers will also be placed in participating schools systems to observe classes and to teach selected lessons (a 40 hour practicum field placement). This placement will begin approximately five weeks after beginning Phase I.Upon successful completion of Phase I, Shenandoah University issues Career Switchers a Phase I Certificate of Completion and submits the student’s credentials to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) for review. This packet contains student’s original Career Switcher application form, the fee for processing the application, documentation of 3 years full time work experience, official transcripts, a record of your passing scores in Praxis Subject Assessment and VCLA, and confirmation of your successful completion of Phase I of the Career Switcher program.Once the Department of Education has reviewed your packet, they issue a Career Switcher Provisional License with endorsement(s) to teach in your subject area(s).

The student’s first one year, Career Switcher provisional teaching license is issued immediately. The Career Switcher provisional license is valid for one year and may be renewed two additional times for one year terms each, if needed. Withdrawal requests are then reviewed by the Hornet Central Manager, whose decision is final. Any authorized tuition refund will be pro-rated depending upon the request submission date.
